Overview:
Comprehension, considered to be the ultimate goal of reading, refers to a students’ ability to read and understand information from written text using knowledge of words, concepts, facts and ideas’ (Konza, 2011; Hempenstall, 2016). Comprehension occurs as the reader actively engages with the text, drawing meaning and creating a version of the text within their own mind (Konza, 2011). Each of the first five elements of the Big Six contribute to comprehension. The ability to successfully comprehend a text depends on the readers’ oral language abilities, their understanding of word meanings and the syntactic and semantic relationship between them, and the readers ability to engage with the text at a deep level (Konza, 2011).
