Konza (2011b) identified the following evidence-based teaching strategies to enhance students' comprehension skills:
- Prepare students before reading (explore prior knowledge, build background knowledge, introduce new vocabulary etc)
- Facilitate engagement during reading aloud- read with minimal interruptions, emphasise key points/ new words that need to be introduced before reading, stop a few times for comments, questions, predictions
- Facilitate student comprehension during independent reading
- Promote comprehension after reading- graphic organisers key here.
- Use questioning as a comprehension strategy.
- Implement Bloom’s taxonomy to differentiate levels of questioning.
